Trend.ly has become a popular resource for users to create trends and find out what others think. The site received funding in 2010 and earned its place as a good resource for tracking trends. Through a large user community, others can find out the opinions of the masses through Trend.ly’s easy to use system. The site remains focused by keeping the process easy and clutter free so users can focus on the trends and share their opinions unhindered.
Trend.ly stands out in the way it focuses entirely on measuring up trends online. The user community is given total power. By allowing users to post trends and polls, Trend.ly presents an unbiased, accurate snapshot of what people find interesting online. The many users can come up with unique, creative trends and see how they measure up. Common trends are also listed. There is some benefit to knowing what is “in” and what is not, especially for anyone that creates content for websites or other online resources.
Trend.ly’s service is simple and the website is kept very basic. Although it is sparse, the site still retains a modern appeal through the dramatic black and white color scheme. As soon as a visitor arrives on the Trend.ly homepage, they are greeted with the main tools of the site: the trend entry fields. Additional navigation links, including the Facebook connect link, login, and sign up, are conveniently located at the top of the homepage. Other than that, the site offers a few trend highlights and little else. This works well because users can stay focused on the purpose of the site and never have to wade through advertisements or flashy graphics.
A new user can register for an account by clicking the white “Signup” link at the top of the homepage. The user is directed to the registration form (which may involve a little scrolling down). The form asks for a full name, email address, password, and security code entry to verify that the user is a human and not a bot. After entering the information and clicking the black and white “Signup: button at the bottom of the page, the user is automatically logged into Trend.ly.
Although Trend.ly offers a unique service many users may find interesting, the site provides nothing that would warrant a fee or premium paid account. The service is very simple and there are no extra frills that come with it. Trend.ly is pretty good at what it does, but in order to justify a subscription fee, more would have to be added. For now, anyone who visit the site can check out features and create an account for free. There is no indication that this will change in the future.
Two main groups can really get into the functionality of Trend.ly. The first is anyone that wants to learn about how people view something online. The second are people who are just generally interested in learning about knew trends and staying “in the know.”
